Earlier this eve I was in an indy movie made by a guy from my local video store. Turns out I'm a terrible actor. We had to do a dozen takes of the scene where a pass is rebuffed with a slap from my daughter.

    Picorna_Cover_webver

Picorna has come a long way from her life as an orphan on the streets of a dirty port city. She was rescued by Sister Talavaria, a fast-rising voice in the Church, who ascended to its leadership with Picorna as her personal apprentice. This year, Talavaria is attending the King's Autumn Court in the capitol city, and Picorna finds herself in a strange place with perils lurking at every turn. With Talavaria's life in danger and a key advisor missing, Picorna sets out to solve a mystery that will place her on a collision course with the Church's most deadly enemies.

Perils of Picorna is a six-issue fantasy comic series written by Amy Kaczmarowski and Rick Silva. It's illustrated by Missy Pena, and published under Dandelion Studios' new Quarterstaff fantasy imprint. Issue #1 will debut at Anime Boston, April 2-4, 2010, and is now available for pre-order.

    Re-watch community?

Since I *finally* have the entire series on DVD now (yay!), is there a re-watch community, or are people interested in starting one? If so, I'd be able to start watching right at the end of April when I get my stuff out of storage, so that'd give us plenty of time to discuss how to do it and get ready.

    sunny drawing room
It sure feels like spring in this sunny little drawing room of mine! Here’s a picture I took as I was working on that Brewster McCloud illustration I posted a week ago.

And here’s a scan of my messed up first attempt at inking the illustration. The piece of paper has since become a paint testing surface. What an interesting mess it’s become!

Book #5 of 50: Magic Under Glass by Jaclyn Dolamore AKA [info]fabulousfrock

    Magic Under Glass
    by Jaclyn Dolamore

Nimara had been a court entertainer in her homeland. Now her voyage overseas to seak her fortune and avoid the repercussions of her family's fall from favor have left her as a "trouser girl", a cheap music hall performer who longs for any kind of escape to a better life.

When her performance catches the attention of a gentleman sorcerer, Nimara is quick to agree to join him at his estate, where she will begin practicing a performance with a sophisticated clockwork automaton of faerie magic.

Nimara finds herself trapped in the midst of a sorcerous conspiracy, surrounded by deadly family secrets, and falling rapidly into an impossible romance with a machine possessed by the soul of a faerie prince.

This is a tightly paced young-adult steampunk romance with a surprisingly rich and detailed world and a very likable heroine. Dolamore's magic has a subtle and haunting feel to it, and a couple of magical battle scenes manage to thrill without the need for massive explosions.

The characters have decent depth to them, down to the minor supporting cast, and the social interactions are as intriguing as the romantic ones.

This is a fun fantasy novel that leaves room for more exploration to come in Dolamore's world.

Magic Under Glass was book #5 in my goal of reading 50 books in 2010.

    New Fiction Published!
Welcome to a new year of the Edge of Propinquity. Issue 51 is now published. March signals the end of winter and the beginning of spring. But as we all know, with spring come the storms of season's change. This month we have a rescue, a meeting, a loss, a revelation and a sacrifice. Each one of these heralds a storm yet to come.

Four Visitors - Singularity, Part Three - by Rick Silva AKA [info]shaharazad
Five lives converge in an old farmhouse by the power lines where an art studio and a garden become the setting for a bloody confrontation that will pit brother against brother. Una Blanco came to town to deliver a message, but when tragedy strikes, Una is forced to choose the most unlikely recipient for her cryptic warning.

Solstice - Winter, Part Six - by Ivan Ewert AKA [info]ivan23
As Soon moves from the picture, those she has touched begin to show their colors. Bacchus' allies begin the dance which will lead them together, as Long's minions draw ever further apart. Winter turns to spring with the ides of March, and some odd awakenings begin to transpire.

Mnemosyne - The Place to Be - by Nick Bergeron
You can run from danger, you can run from a decision, you can run from trouble. What you can't run from, however, is a thought. The more you try not to think about something, the more it gets stuck in your consciousness and lies in wait for you to find it again. All it takes is just one more push for it all to come crashing out.

Sparrow Hill Road - Tell Laura I Love Her - by Seanan McGuire AKA [info]seanan_mcguire
When Rose helped a racer named Tommy find his way to the ghostroads, she never expected to have his girlfriend come seeking vengeance. Caught in a trap she can't break out of and accused of a crime she didn't commit, is there a way for Rose to escape the punishment ahead of her?

Guest Author - Self-Possessed by Erica Hildabrand
Sara is Reggie's biggest fan and Reggie is one of the most popular singers around. Sara can see the magic in Reggie's music and is willing to do anything to become a part of it...even kill.

Have you ever looked over the edge and seen something looking back at you?
